UCL: Ademola Lookman scores as Atletico Madrid edge past Barcelona into Champion League semi finals

Atletico Madrid held on to reach the Champions League semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 home defeat to Barcelona left them 3-2 up on aggregate.

Barcelona, trailing 2-0 from the first leg, struck early when Lamine Yamal slid the ball past Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso after a loose touch from former Barca defender Clément Lenglet, cutting the deficit inside five minutes.

Nineteen minutes later the tie was level as Ferran Torres met a Dani Olmo pass and curled a composed left-footed shot into the top corner.

The Madrid crowd fell silent until Marcos Llorente surged down the right and set up Nigerian star Ademola Lookman, who finished in the box to restore Atlético’s aggregate advantage.

Earlier, Barcelona had a chance to go 3-0 on the night when an unmarked Fermin López rose to head, but Musso produced a crucial save.

Torres appeared to make it 3-1 early in the second half, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside after his volley took a deflection.

Barcelona kept the pressure on but were reduced to ten men when Eric García fouled Atlético striker Alexander Sørloth on a counter, conceding a late sending-off.

Despite late headers from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araújo, Barcelona could not find the goal that would have completed a remarkable comeback.

Atlético now advance to face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, aiming for their first final appearance since 2016.
