Israel’s IDF soldier smashes Jesus’ statue in Lebanon

An image posted to social media on 19 April shows an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier appearing to smash a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon.

The IDF has confirmed the photograph’s authenticity and said it will act against those responsible.

After an initial review, the military said “it was determined that the photograph depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon.”

“The IDF views the incident with great severity and emphasizes that the soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops,” the statement added.

The Northern Command is investigating the incident and handling it “through the chain of command,” the IDF said, noting that “appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings.”

The military also said the Northern Command will assist the Christian community in restoring the statue to its place.

Israel is currently conducting a military operation against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
