NURTW fallout: Gunshots, panic as MC Oluomo’s boys clash with keke union supporters
Some members of the banned Lagos chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN) reportedly clashed on Friday.
The fight caused panic in the Meiran–Ijaiye axis and Ekoro road in the Abule-Egba area of Lagos.
A resident of the area said they heard gunshot sounds which caused panic.
The resident, who is an official of Alimisho Local Government, said, “The NURTW boys came and were chased away. The police came around and stopped what could have been a major fight. We hope that the fight ends there.
“We are no longer safe in this area. I suggest police station their officers here permanently.”
A trader in the area said the confrontation was a minor one.
“The NURTW people came around and were sent away by Keke Napep boys. Then, the police came. Nobody was injured. It’s just a minor fight. Everything is fine now,” she said.
Loyalists of the suspended Lagos NURTW Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, MC Oluomo, and Istijaba whose real name is Azeez Abiola, are at loggerheads over the control of the area.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has banned NURTW in Lagos and appointed MC Oluomo chairman of all motor parks. Istijaba’s boys, it appears, are in no hurry to relinquish control of the tricycle (keke) union to Sanwo-Olu’s appointee.
