5 killed, scores injured in Christmas Eve road accident

An accident that occurred along the Benin-Ekpoma-Abuja Road in Edo State, Thursday, has claimed five lives and left scores with varying degrees of injury.
Punch reports that the accident occurred around 11.30 am near Obagie community in the Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state
Three vehicles – an 18-passenger commercial bus, an articulated van, and a Toyota Sienna – were involved in the fatal accident.
The report says the bus was heading to Ekpoma and was trying to avoid a pothole when it suddenly had a head-on collision with an oncoming a truck laden with baskets of tomatoes.
An occupant of the Toyota Sienna told Punch News that their vehicle narrowly escaped the carnage.
“During the crash, the bus fell on the driver’s side, while the Sienna rammed into it,” he was quoted to have said.
According to the report, the Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Henry Benemesia, confirmed the crash.
“We deployed a team from the sector command to the scene for rescue operations, and it reported that four passengers died, while several others were injured,” he said.
