Nigerian sports broadcaster Temisan Okomi dies after brief illness

Temisan Okomi, a veteran Nigerian sports broadcaster, has died following a short illness.

Classic FM, where Okomi worked for more than 12 years, confirmed his death in a social media statement on Friday.

“With the heaviest of hearts, we regret to announce the passing of one of our staff, Temisan Okomi, following a brief illness,” the station said, adding that he was the Group Head of the Sports Department and would be deeply missed.

The statement conveyed the organisation’s condolences to his family.

Okomi had decades of experience in Nigerian sports journalism.

He worked for the now-defunct HiTV during its brief period of broadcasting live European football to Nigerian viewers, and also had roles at Lagos Television (LTV) and several other broadcasters.

He joined Classic FM in 2014 and rose to head the sports department.

Okomi studied Agronomy and Crop Science at the University of Uyo before moving into journalism.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica, and their three sons.
