INEC moves Osun governorship campaign deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set a new deadline for campaigning in the Osun State governorship contest after shifting the poll by one week.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, INEC said it brought the election forward from 8 August to 15 August 2026 when it published a revised timetable on 26 February.

Consequently, the commission declared that political parties must end all campaigning by midnight on Thursday 13 August, in line with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires campaigns to cease 24 hours before voting.

Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, urged parties, candidates and other stakeholders to “strictly adhere to the revised timeline”, saying the commission remained committed to holding “free, fair, credible and inclusive elections.”

The announcement formalises the campaign deadline and could require parties to compress remaining campaign activities into a shortened schedule ahead of the 15 August poll.
