No confirmation of Benue killings — police
The Nigeria police say they are investigating allegations of fresh killings in Benue state.
Social media is buzzing with reports that over 30 people, including students of the College of Education in Katsina Ala, were killed by Fulani herdsmen.
There are also claims that as much 150 persons were butchered in recent attacks blamed on the herdsmen. Many residents were also said to have been displaced by the killers.
But the police said they were yet to confirm the claims.
“I have not been able to confirm that from any of the officers on the ground because there were no reports,” Catherine Sewuese told TheCable on Friday.
“They have gone out now to trail those areas where these allegations are coming from because they earlier alleged that 100 persons were killed. We went and didn’t see any corpse, now they say 32.
“We have deployed men again to go back there. Maybe later in the day, if I get anything I will let you know.”
Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom, has asked residents to protect themselves by using weapons not prohibited by law.
