Buhari must choose Aso Rock clinic over London hospital — Senate
The Senate has told Nigeria’s presidency to put the Aso Rock clinic in order so that President Muhammadu Buhari would stop spending public money on foreign medical trips.
Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs issued the warning when the State House Permanent Secretary, Tijani Umar, appeared before the panel to defend his 2021 budget estimates.
Umar, on Thursday, asked for a budget of N19.7bn for 2021. He wants to spend N1.3bn of the proposed amount on the State House Clinic.
The Senate committee led by Senator Danjuma La’ah (PDP, Kaduna South) then issued the warning.
La’ah was of the opinion that budgeting so much for the clinic would be a waste of money if Buhari continued travelling to London for every medical emergency.
After facing the committee, Umar told journalists he intended to put the Aso Rock clinic in order.
Recall Buhari’s wife, Aisha, complained about the lack of the most basic of drugs at the clinic where she was initially admitted after falling ill a while ago. The clinic, which has gulped over N10 billion naira since Buhari became president, was so ill-equipped that Aisha had to be taken to a private hospital.
