AMVCA announces new voting System for Best Actor/Actress Awards in its Tenth Anniversary Edition
AMVCA's quest for excellence extends to 25 awards
In a groundbreaking move, the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) has bid farewell to public voting in the Best Actor or Best Actress in a Leading or Supporting Role categories. This strategic shift comes in response to criticism that actors with massive social media followings tend to dominate, sidelining true acting prowess.
This year, a select jury will take the reins in determining winners for 16 non-voting categories, including prestigious titles like Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Director, and Best Movie and TV Series. 8 audience-voted categories, ranging from Best Scripted Africa Magic Original to Best Indigenous Africa Magic Original, will keep the viewers engaged in the decision-making process.
AMVCA’s quest for excellence extends to 25 awards, featuring two special recognition accolades. Busola Tejumola, the Head of Content and Channels West Africa at MultiChoice, confirmed the opening of submissions in a press release to Pulse. Entries are invited from productions publicly exhibited or broadcast between December 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, with the submission window spanning from January 15 to February 14, 2024.
Busola Tejumola expressed, “As we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, we embark on a bold journey to reevaluate our award categories, align with global trends, and set new benchmarks. This involves retiring certain categories, streamlining others, and revisiting both voting and non-voting classifications.” Get ready for a spectacular AMVCA edition as the stage is set for a new era of recognizing excellence in African film and television.
Movies, whether screened in theaters or other platforms, along with made-for-television movies and television series, are invited for consideration, provided they align with the specified terms and conditions.
As the anticipation builds, the prestigious awards ceremony is scheduled to unfold in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, come May 2024.
