ALERT: Buhari ‘bows to pressure, to scrap SARS soon’
President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is expected to announce the total dismantling of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), reports say.
SARS is a police unit notorious for bribery, illegal arrests, extortion and extra-judicial killings.
The Inspector-General Muhammed Adamu is reportedly preparing a statement to disband SARS following widespread calls to do so.
Adamu, according to Peoples Gazette, would have made the announcement immediately after meeting with President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday, but was thwarted after presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said the administration should not surrender to Twitter warriors.
The government is now reportedly ready to yield to the demands of peaceful demonstrators who have vowed to keep protesting until SARS is dismantled and the police force is reformed.
