NIN website crashes as Nigerians storm NIMC office in Lagos

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently instructed telecommunications operators in the country to block all SIM cards that are not registered with the National Identity Numbers (NIN).

The blocking is expected to begin in January. But a reliable source told The Realm News that Airtel is already blocking non-complaint SIM cards.

Another source say Glo users who have no NIN are also being blocked. Others are being notified of impending ban.

You can pre-register for NIN via the website of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). But, guess what, the website seemed to have crashed.

We got an error message when we visited the NIMC website this morning as the screenshot below shows.

Images emerging from a NIN registration centre in Alausa area of Lagos State shows a huge crowd of people who are apparently trying to register for the national ID to avoid having their SIM cards blocked.

This is happening as authorities warn Nigerians against mass gatherings that they say could become “super-spreader events” for the coronavirus.
