2 killed, others injured as police clash with ‘Hausa’ okada riders in Lagos
Two persons were reportedly killed as okada riders clashed with police officers in Itire area of Lagos.
Two other persons were, according to reports, also injured during the Saturday clash.
Police officers from the Itire division reportedly seized motorcycles (okadas) from two ‘Hausa’ riders around 8am and took the bikes to their station.
The okada owners were said to have reported the incident to their members who followed them to the police station on motorcycles to protest the seizure.
The police reportedly fired teargas canisters to disperse the protesters, who in turn hurled stones and planks at the officers.
“A fight ensued between police officers and okada riders,” a source told Sahara Reporters.
“I think the okada riders were trying to attack the police officers, so, the police started shooting into the air.
“But when the okada riders started throwing stones and planks and started bringing out machetes, the police officers started shooting at them directly.
“I think they shot four. Two died and some are injured.”
One of the victims was reportedly hit in the mouth by a bullet, leaving in with a gaping wound in the mouth.
