VIDEO: Driver, bystanders escape electrocution as truck crashes into high-tension electricity pole

A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided when a speeding truck lost control, crashed into a high-tension power pole, and sent the pole tumbling into a nearby shopping mall, causing damage to several areas.

The lone accident, according to the video from ABN TV, happened on Friday night at Lagos Street, by Finbarrs Road, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The video also showed the truck, partially mangled, with debris surrounding it and high-tension cables dangling dangerously low.

The circumstances under which the truck driver and bystanders managed to avoid electrocution remain puzzling.

However, an expert consulted by The Realm News in Umuahia highlighted the significant dangers associated with such incidents.

“If an active power line falls onto a vehicle, it can electrify the car,” the EDDC staff member explained. “One must exercise extreme caution to avoid electrocution.”

He offered advice on how to stay safe in these life-threatening situations.

“Stay inside your vehicle. Tires do not protect you because they are not insulating. They are semiconductors by design and can conduct electricity depending on the voltage and circuit resistance.”

He said the car’s body provides a protective barrier as long as you remain entirely inside. “It acts like a Faraday cage.”

According to him, exiting the car poses significant risks. “No matter how carefully you exit, doing so exposes you to what is known as STEP potential, which can result in severe injuries depending on the voltage of the fallen line.”

“Remain in the car until the power line has been cleared by the appropriate authorities. It may feel like a long time, but it is far better than the alternative,” he cautioned.

“Keep your windows mostly closed to keep your limbs inside,” he added.
