NUJ: Journalist union to enthrone Rauf Aregbesola as grand patron
The Nigeria Union of Journalist in the South-West will, on Friday, inaugurate Rauf Aregbesola as grand patron.
Aregbesola, who presently works as interior minister under President Muhammadu Buhari, a “civilian dictator” with dark anti-press antecedents, announced the move via his social media accounts on Thursday.
The move could put NUJ members, most of them journalists working in the print media, at crossroads regarding loyalty to their soon-to-be grand patron and the unbiased publication of truth.
It remains unclear how the NUJ leadership expects its members to continue to cover Aregbesola and his allies objectively and impartially once the former Osun governor is awarded the title.
This move is, however, not a new thing. The Nigerian media industry has a history of romantic affairs with the political class.
