Driver knocks police officer off bridge during battle with LASTMA officials
A Lagos driver has landed in serious trouble for “trying to kill” a police officer.
The yet-to-identified driver was, according to a viral video, seen evading arrest by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). The driver was allegedly driving against traffic on a highway.
The driver, in the process of reversing his vehicle, knocked a police officer off the bridge and into into the canal below, the video showed. The driver then came out of his vehicle crying and begging for mercy.
The police officer is in hospital where he is being treated for the injuries he survived from the fall.
Jubril Gawat, a media aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the police officer broke an arm and is in critical condition.
He faulted those supporting the action of the driver, saying that he committed multiple offences.
“The officer is not dead. He broke an arm and is in critical condition,” Gawat tweeted.
“I will personally investigate this and the driver must face the law fully for committing multiple offences.”
He said the driver is in custody and would be charged to court on Thursday afternoon.
