Burna Boy, Davido lose at the 66th Grammys
In a Grammy twist, top Nigerian music stars like Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake faced disappointment, losing in all 10 nominations spanning five categories.
The ‘Best African Music Performance’ title eluded the Nigerian contingent as South-African singer Tyla clinched the honor with her 2023 hit, “Water,” at the Grammy Premiere ceremony.
Even 2021 Best Global Album winner Burna Boy couldn’t secure a win this year, as Shakti’s world fusion band triumphed with “This Moment,” beating out Burna Boy’s “I Told Them” and Davido’s “Timeless” albums.
Burna Boy’s collaboration with American rapper 21 Savage, “Sittin’ on Top of The World,” didn’t translate into a Grammy win, losing to Lil Durk and J Cole’s “All My Life” for Best Melodic Rap.
Tems, a previous Grammy winner, lost her chance in the Song Written for Visual Media category with Rihanna’s ‘Lift me Up’ for Black Panther, defeated by Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For’ from the 2023 drama ‘Barbie’.
