Borno government demolishes shops over ‘security reasons’
The Borno Geographic Information Service (BOGIS), on Wednesday, clarified its decision to remove cabin shops, shanties and other illegal structures erected along Maiduguri-Kano road.
Rising security concerns and flagrant abuse of building regulations have been cited as the major reasons.
The Executive Secretary of BOGIS, Engr. Adam B. Bababe stated that:
“As part of the 10-Pact Transformation Agenda of the current administration of His Excellency the Executive Governor, Prof. Engr. Babagana Umara Zulum in ensuring cleaner Borno and restoration of the Maiduguri Masterplan, the BOGIS, Urban Planning & Development Board and other relevant agencies held several meetings on the need to enforce these regulations.
“Government empathises to the plight of people considered as urban poor traders but unfortunately most of the targeted structures are illegal and have failed to the stipulated setbacks, pay nothing to the coffers of government and serve as location for nefarious activities by unscrupulous elements of the society, these leaves government without option than to enforce the law.
He urged the general public to be law abiding.
