Bandits ambush travellers, kill one, abduct others along Kaduna-Abuja highway
Despite Nigeria's huge security spending, the northern part of the country has been under a plague of deadly attacks with soldiers complaining of lacking enough firepower to arrest the situation.
Gunmen have killed one traveller and kidnapped several others near Rijana town along the Kaduna-Abuja Highway.
A resident of Rijana, Ahmed Iliyasu, said the incident occurred around 8:00am on Wednesday at Gadar Malam Mamman, a few kilometers to Rijana community.
He said the gunmen blocked the road before carrying out the operation. He said one traveller was shot dead and others abducted.
One of the escapees, Arch. Mudassur Ladan, said he was driving to Abuja when the assailants appeared from the bush and started shooting.
“Four assailants were shooting sporadically. I saw four vehicles parked by the roadside with their occupants lying flat on the ground,” the resident told Daily Trust.
“Two men came from behind and started shooting. I drove into the bush, but at a point, we had to abandon the car.
“We returned to the place later. The police were there and I saw one man dead, and others with bullet wounds,” he narrated.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, Mohammed Jalige, asked for time to verify the incident from the area command, but he could not do so at the time of filing this report.
