Nnamdi Kanu using Twitter to scatter Nigeria — Lai Mohammed
The Muhammadu Buhari regime has alleged that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is using Twitter to destabilise Nigeria.
Information and culture minister Lai Mohammed made the claim during an interview with BBC News Africa.
Mohammed alleged that IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu uses Twitter to direct members to attack policemen, soldiers, correctional centres and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The minister lamented that Twitter has failed to sanction the IPOB leader for using the platform to unsettle the country.
“IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu in particular, his platform of choice to destabilise the country is Twitter,” Mohammed said.
“Twitter is actually the platform of choice for the separatist leader who resides outside Nigeria but issues directives for his members to attack the symbols of authority such as policemen, soldiers, correctional centres, electoral offices.
“This has been done willfully and consistently without consequences using always the Twitter platform.”
Mohammed’s comment came in the wake of a government ban on Twitter. The Buhari regime ordered the embargo after the social media platform deleted a tweet in which the president threatened to unleash violence on separatists.
The Buhari government has also repeatedly blamed Twitter for last year’s EndSARS protests which it said were organised to undo Nigeria.
Buhari’s attorney-general Abubakar Malami had threatened to arrest and persecute Nigerians who bypass the Twitter ban with the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) or other means.
