Youths raze police station as ‘trigger-happy officer kill 2 siblings’ in Imo

A police station in Isinweke local government area of Imo state has been set ablaze.

The suspected arson followed the alleged murder of two siblings, identified as Chinanu and Chinyere Okonkwo, by an unamed police officer.

“Angry youths of Ihitte/Uboma just burnt down a Police Station in Isinweke LGA following the killing of two siblings ‘Chinanu and Chinyere Okonkwo’ by a trigger-happy and yet-to-be identified policeman,” @imosocials tweeted on Tuesday.

“They also dumped the bodies of the victims at the station.”

State police spokesperson Ikeokwu Rowland said an intervention team has been sent to the area to restore normalcy, Peoples Gazette reported.

Extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians is a trend with the Nigerian police. In 2020, their activities led to the historic EndSARS protest that rocked major cities across Nigeria, as there were outcries on the unchecked excesses of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigerian police force.

The protest which escalated to becoming a global agitation, forced the state governors to set-up judicial panels to seek redress for victims.

Despite setting up judicial panels to address extrajudicial killings, trigger-happy police officers are still wielding guns, opening fire on unarmed civilians.
