Twitter ban: ‘Nigeria loses over N65 billion in 30 days’

The decision of the Muhammadu Buhari government to ban Twitter has cost the Nigerian economy N65.3 billion.

The losses were recorded over a 30-day period, TheCable Index estimated. The index was based on estimates my NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool.

“Today makes it 30 days since the government blocked the operations of Twitter,” TheCable Index tweeted on Tuesday morning.

“According to NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, the economic impact of Twitter suspension on Nigeria is estimated at ₦2.2bn loss daily.

“This implies that Nigeria has lost ₦65.3bn in the last 30 days.”

Recall that Buhari banned the social media platform after Twitter deleted a post in which the Nigerian president threatened to unleash the military on separatists.

Twitter and the Nigerian government have, however, started negotiating a return for the social media platform.
