Sunday Igboho arrested by Interpol in Benin Republic — lawyer

Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho was arrested by the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

This is according to Igboho’s lawyer, Yomi Alliyu.

Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was also arrested, the lawyer said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to him, the Nigerian regime, through Interpol, arrested Igboho, who is a German citizen, and his wife on Monday night at an airport in neighbouring Benin Republic.

They were arrested while trying to catch a flight to Germany.

Alliyu urged Germany, Benin Republic and the international community “to rise up and curb the impunity of the Nigerian government by refusing any application for extradition of our client who already has application before the International Criminal Court (ICC) duly acknowledged”.

Before the arrest, the Muhammadu Buhari regime ordered immigration and customs agencies to stop Igboho from leaving the country.

“Sunday Igboho has been arrested in Cotonou,” a source told Sahara Reporters on Monday.

“He was arrested about an hour ago. He was supposed to travel to Germany through Cotonou this night. He wanted to leave Africa through Cotonou. He was arrested by security operatives in Cotonou.

“They are planning to bring him back to Nigeria.”

Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, is wanted for leading calls for a Yoruba nation breakaway from Nigeria.
