RCCG: We’re using Twitter according to international law, Pastor Adeboye tells Buhari

Pastor Enoch A. Adeboye has explained why the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and its entities will not stop using Twitter.

The RCCG general overseer issued the one-tweet explainer after the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) ordered radio and television stations to delete their Twitter accounts and stop using the social media platform as a source of news.

The NBC directive followed the Muhammadu Buhari regime’s decision to ban Twitter after the platform deleted a tweet in which the Nigerian leader threatened to unleash violence on separatists.

Adeboye’s RCCG runs a radio station. The church also runs Dove TV which broadcasts internationally.

That could explain why the popular pastor who helped Buhari win election and reelection tweeted the following on Monday:

“The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 Nations & Territories. The tweets here are in accordance to Article 19 of The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

The article in question states:

“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

This means that Adeboye and the RCCG sees Buhari’s Twitter ban as an infringement on this right.

It remains unclear what Buhari will do with Adeboye. It also remains unclear what Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who is a top RCCG pastor thinks about the whole matter, seeing that he has been silent.
