Oyo: Nigerians praise Seyi Makinde ‘for boosting IGR without raising taxes’

The Oyo State Government says it has been able to improve its internally-generated revenue (IGR) without taxing people more.

Governor Seyi Makinde based the claim on data recently released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) H1 2020 report shows that our IGR grew by 26.4% even amidst this pandemic,” Makinde said on Monday.

“We did this without increasing the tax burden on our citizens.

“What we have done so far is to focus on our competitive advantage,” Makinde said.

Governments across Nigeria are struggling to recover their economies from coronavirus lockdowns.

Kaduna Govenor Nasir El-Rufai is reportedly addressing this by, among other things, imposing a N1000-levy on all adults.

But Makinde, in early October, promised that his government would not try to improve IGR through additional taxation on Oyo residents.

Nigerians are heaping praises on the governor for “putting your people first”. See tweets below.
