EndSARS: Reps summon Police IG over SARS dissolution, SWAT

The police responded to EndSARS protests by dissolving SARS and replacing it with a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) unit.

The House of Representatives has summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu over ongoing protests against police brutality.

The summon was issued by the ad hoc committee the House set up to address the nationwide demonstrations against the now-dismantled Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

The IGP is to appear before the special panel on October 22, 2020.

The panel will also conduct town hall meetings across the country to hear from Nigerians on the matter.

SARS was formed to address violent crimes. But the unit was later notorious for carrying out alleged armed robbery, bribery, extortion, illegal arrests and extra-judicial killings against Nigerians.

Adamu responded to EndSARS protests by dissolving SARS and replacing it with a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) unit.

But Nigerians governors told the IGP the swift replacement was ill-timed.
