DELSU: Kidnappers free SSANU chairman, driver

The Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka branch, Monday Izu, has regained freedom.

Izu was returning from an official assignment in Warri last when gunmen seized him. He was released alongside his driver.

Both men spent six days in captivity.

The abduction took place on the Eku-Abraka Road in the Ethiope East local government area of Delta State, where the gunmen lurked around a failed portion of the road.

Izu’s kidnappers established contact with his family on Saturday with his mobile phone, Punch reported.

Sources reportedly said the abductors initially demanded N24 million but later reduced to N5 million.

Izu and his driver were later released and reunited with their family members.

It was not immediately clear whether or nor ransom was paid.

State police spokesperson Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the development. She said the police were on the trail of the kidnappers.
