Buhari promises to protect ALL Nigerians from ethnic violence

The Nigerian government will not sit back and watch its citizens attacked by hateful ethnic bigots, President Muhammadu Buhari has promised.

Buhari made the promise via a social media post on Sunday.

“Our government will protect all religious and ethnic groups in Nigeria, whether majority or minority, in line with our responsibility under the constitution,” the president said.

“We will not allow any ethnic or religious group to stoke up hatred and violence against other groups.

“I appeal to religious and traditional leaders, as well as Governors and other elected leaders across the country, to join hands with the Federal Government to ensure that communities in their domain are not splintered along ethnic and other primordial lines.”

Buhari’s promise of safety and appeal for calm followed a deadly Hausa-Yoruba clash in Shasha area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

At least 5,000 people have been displaced and many continue to flee their homes in the wake of the violence that is also said to have claimed 20 lives.

There have also been tension in the South-West where Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho vowed to expel Fulani herdsmen and settlers. Biafra separatists are issuing the same threats in the South-East where their militia, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), recently attacked Fulani herdsmen and burned their cows.

The Fulanis are accused of stealing lands after killing their rightful owners, vandalising farms, kidnapping locals and raping women.
