‘600 out of 800 Kankara students still missing’ after bandits raided Katsina school

Police said they could not ascertain the number of kidnapped or missing students.

At least 600 schoolboys are reportedly unaccounted for after bandits invaded Government Science Secondary School (GSSS) in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State on Friday night.

Reports say two students and two security operatives were killed during the attack. One of the operatives is a police officer. The other is a school security guard.

The police confirmed the attack, adding that an injured officer was being treated in hospital.

The police also said it rescued 200 students from the bandits after apprehensive parents stormed the school to ascertain the fate of their children.

According to human rights activist Bulama Bukarti, “several sources in GSSS Kankara say only 200 of 800 boys in school have been accounted for.

“But government trolls sitting in Abuja claim that all the boys are back yet they’re saying rescue operation has started. If they’ve returned, what are you rescuing?

“This is how Chibok unfolded,” Bukarti tweeted Saturday in reference to the government denial that trailed the 2014 kidnapping of over 200 schoolgirls in Borno.

The police also said they could not ascertain the number of kidnapped or missing students. Katsina police spokesperson Gambo Isah said this in a statement on Saturday.

The statement partly read:

“The Police, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Air Force are working closely with the school authorities to ascertain the actual number of the missing and/or kidnapped students while search parties are assiduously working with a view to finding and/or rescue the missing students

“It will be too early to say at this particular moment the actual number of students that have been kidnapped or missing.”
