Bauchi: Teenager, gang ‘attack woman with machete, steal mattresses’

A 19-year-old is among a gang of five alleged armed robbers the police just arrested in Bauchi State.

The gang allegedly broke into Banana Island Lodge, Gwallameji at the weekend, entered one of the rooms and attacked a 23-year-old woman leaving her with injuries.

They “macheted her with cutlass”, state police spokesperson Ahmed Mohammad Wakil said in a statement on Tuesday. The alleged attack was carried out in the early hours of Saturday.

The woman is still receiving treatment at the ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi where she was taken after her alleged attackers went away with a box containing her clothes, a laptop, a mobile phone, mattresses, gas cylinder and a purse containing N700.

The police later arrested 19-year-old Yunusa Ali, also known as Raka, and four other men in connection with the attack. The other members of the alleged armed robbery gang are:

  • Endurance Luya, 28, of Gwallameji,
  • Daniel Adamu (alias Small), 20, of Yelwan Tudu,
  • Emmanuel Hassan (alias Junior), 23, of Rafin Zurfi,
  • Aliyu Sulaiman (alias Aljan), 25, of Gwallameji

Police said they recovered the following items from the suspects:

  • One cutlass with a bloodstain
  • One jackknife
  • One knife
  • Three sanitary pads

“The Command emphasise that safety and security is not the sole responsibility of security agencies alone, hence members of the public must play a vital role towards ensuring peace by availing the Police with useful information that will be instrumental to unbundling of criminal acts and tendencies,” Wakil said.
