1 killed, another Seriki Fulani flees as ‘Sunday Igboho sets houses, cattle market ablaze’

A suspected attack on a Fulani community in Ogun State has been blamed on Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho.

The suspected attack took place in Igua, a community in Yewa North local government area of Ogun State. The area, according to reports, is a trouble spot where Fulani herdsmen looking for grass to feed their cows clash with farmers especially in the dry season.

Igboho and his supporters were accused of attacking the community and killing one person in the process. A number of cows were also allegedly killed after the attackers set a cattle market on fire.

The onslaught was allegedly carried out around 8pm on Monday by Igboho and his supporters who have vowed to expel Fulani herdsmen and settlers from the South-West. They say members of the ethnic group are responsible for vandalism, kidnapping, rape and killings in Yorubaland.

The alleged attack on Igua occured the same day Igboho and his supporters stormed Ogun State to “expel criminal herdsmen”.

“They burnt the houses and that of Seriki Fulani, Adamu Oloru, located at Igua this [Monday] evening,” the Chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ogun State branch, Abubakar Ibrahim Dende, told Daily Trust.

“They also set cattle market ablaze.

“We have been contacting the security agents, including the DSS, as we are aware that he is coming.

“We listened to the information on radio, we learnt that he was welcomed by the state government.

“We are helpless as we don’t have anybody to protect us.

“Many of our people are now scattered in the bush,” he said.

One Muhammadu Chede also said that his brother, a Fulani herdsman known as Jiji Danmawale, was killed in the process and his body burnt.

“We are now at Randa in Abeokuta, we are making some arrangements to get his remains for burial,” Chede said.

Igboho was in the state capital Abeokuta on Monday evening where he disclosed that he was invited by the Ogun State government who denied doing so.

The government says it is meeting with the warring parties.

Before going to Ogun, Igboho allegedly expelled another Fulani chief from Igangan, a community in Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo State.
